Minecraft Beta & Preview 26.60.29: Ice Caves, Frostbite Mob & Freezing Effect
What Changed
Minecraft Beta & Preview version 26.60.29, released on 30 September 2026, delivers the first playable slice of Game Drop 4 of 2026, a winter-themed content wave previewed at Minecraft LIVE. The headline additions are all experimental, meaning you need to toggle them on manually in a test world. Here's the full picture:
Ice Caves Biome
A brand-new underground biome now carves itself beneath cold surface biomes. Its floors and ceilings are built from Packed Ice and Calcite, ores hide inside pockets of Stone and Deepslate, and you won't find a single patch of Dirt, Granite, or Glow Lichen down here. Strays and the new Frostbite mob join the usual cave-dwelling crowd.
New Blocks
- Ice Crystals, The only light source in Ice Caves. They grow on top of Packed Ice, resemble Amethyst Clusters, and break if their supporting block is removed. (Note: they're temporarily smaller than their intended final size.)
- Icicles, Speleothem-style blocks similar to Dripstone. They hang from Packed Ice ceilings, can grow up to five blocks long, only develop in low-light areas outside the Nether, and fall when exposed to enough light, dealing damage on impact and extra damage to anything unlucky enough to land on them.
Frostbite Mob
This new Zombie variant spawns in cold and icy biomes. It switches between throwing Ice Balls at range and closing in for melee attacks that inflict the new Freezing effect. It walks on top of Powder Snow without sinking, is completely immune to freezing, and drops Rotten Flesh and Ice Balls when defeated. Leave it submerged long enough and it reverts to a regular Zombie. Existing Zombies and Husks will also transform into Frostbites when caught inside Powder Snow.
Freezing Effect & New Potions
The Freezing status effect makes players shake, shrinks their jump height, and eventually chips away at their health, similar to being buried in Powder Snow. Wearing Leather Armour prevents the frozen visual buildup but does not block the effect itself. Mobs vulnerable to freezing take five times the normal damage from it. A full potion line-up can be brewed using Ice Balls: Potion, Splash Potion, Lingering Potion, and Arrow of Freezing.
Other Fixes & Changes
- Redstone dust now correctly renders climbing up a block side.
- Cushions no longer vanish when their chunk reloads.
- An item-duplication exploit (dropping a stack while inventory is full) has been closed.
- The End's screen flash in Fancy graphics now matches Java Edition's intensity.
- Distance fog over water and inventory item visibility bugs have been corrected.
- Slime splits no longer inherit parent properties.
- Major improvements to Realms world download speed and reliability.
- A refreshed main menu layout with better performance is rolling out incrementally.
- Stability fixes for the "Generating World" loading screen and dimension transfers.
Why It Matters
Game Drop 4 is shaping up to be one of the most atmospheric underground updates since the introduction of Dripstone caves. Ice Crystals redefine how caves can be lit, entirely by natural, harvestable blocks instead of Glow Lichen, and Icicles introduce a new environmental hazard that rewards careful building and punishes torchless exploration. The Frostbite, meanwhile, is the first mob that actively spreads a status effect through both melee and ranged attacks, making cold biomes genuinely dangerous in a new way.
Java and Bedrock
This build is a Bedrock-only Beta & Preview release. All the winter content is experimental and must be enabled per-world. Java Edition players should watch for matching snapshot coverage as the drop develops, Mojang typically keeps both editions in step for major game drops, but no Java build carrying these features has been released yet.
For Server Owners
If you run a Bedrock or cross-play server, this build is not suitable for production. Experimental features can corrupt worlds, and the beta client is incompatible with release-version servers. Wait for a stable release before considering any world updates. Server admins should also note the new dedicated server settings for entity attack request compatibility and targeted-actor range, useful tuning options once the features leave experimental.
For Parents
Nothing in this update changes online safety, chat, or purchase flows. The Frostbite is a standard hostile mob, spooky in concept but no more intense than a Zombie or Skeleton. The experimental toggle means your child won't encounter any of the new content unless they deliberately enable it in a test world. The item-duplication fix is a welcome change that keeps survival worlds fair and balanced.
For Players
Ready to go spelunking somewhere seriously cold? Here's your quick-start checklist for the Ice Cave drop:
- Gear up with Leather Armour before entering, it's your best defence against the Freezing effect.
- Watch the ceiling. Icicles fall when you place torches nearby, so plan your lighting carefully.
- Collect Ice Balls from defeated Frostbites to brew your own Potions of Freezing.
- Don't let Zombies near Powder Snow, they'll transform into Frostbites and become much harder to deal with.
- Ice Crystals are currently smaller than intended, so expect them to look different in the final release.
Do SNT Kingdoms Need an Update?
No action needed, and none is possible yet. SNT kingdoms run on Paper 1.21.11 and Fabric 1.21.4 backends behind a Velocity proxy, with ViaVersion/ViaBackwards/ViaRewind handling clients from version 1.13 through 1.21.11. Minecraft version 26.x uses Mojang's new year-based versioning scheme, which PaperMC, Velocity, and the Via suite have not yet migrated to support. That means 26.60.29 Beta & Preview clients cannot connect to SNT kingdoms at this time.
Beyond the version gap, this build is a beta carrying fully experimental features, not the kind of thing you'd want anywhere near a live kingdom in any case. When Game Drop 4 lands as a stable release and the server ecosystem catches up to the 26.x versioning, SNT will evaluate an upgrade path. Until then, all six worlds in your kingdom, Survival, SharedLife, RandomLoot, Chaos, Spleef, and Rivals, continue running smoothly on the current stable stack.
