Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 Snapshot 8: Realm Invite Codes, Explorer Map Renames & a Wave of Bug Fixes
What Changed
Mojang dropped Java Edition 26.3 Snapshot 8 on 12 August 2026, and it's a meaty one. The headline feature is Realm Invite Codes, a brand-new way to welcome friends without fiddling with individual player invitations. On top of that, three Explorer Maps got cleaner names, the World Options screen received another round of polish, and the development team closed out a remarkable number of long-standing bugs.
Realm Invite Codes
- Realm owners can now create and manage Invite Codes directly from the Realm settings.
- Each Realm supports up to five active codes at once.
- Every code can be toggled active or inactive, given a custom expiration date, or deleted entirely.
- Anyone with a code can join through a new "Join Realm" screen, no friend-request needed.
Renamed Explorer Maps
- Buried Ancient City Map (previously something wordier)
- Buried Mineshaft Map
- Abandoned Camp Map
World Options Screen Improvements
- The screen is now reachable straight from the pause menu.
- "Game Mode" is renamed "Default Game Mode" for clarity.
- A new Personal Game Mode field lets you switch your own mode without commands.
- A new Force Game Mode toggle controls whether all players are locked to the world's default mode.
Gameplay Tweaks
- Cushions are now only destroyed when completely surrounded by suffocating blocks.
- Villager trades unlock in real time as a villager levels up, even while you're mid-trade.
Why It Matters
The Invite Code system is genuinely useful: instead of a Realm owner having to be online and manually accepting each friend, they can share a link-style code in a group chat and let people join on their own schedule. The expiry and active/inactive controls mean you can run a "join weekend" and then switch the code off, tidy and safe.
The bug fix list is equally significant. Dozens of issues touching projectile desyncs, boat passengers, experience orb phasing, villager trade updates, and language loading failures have all been addressed. If you've ever watched an arrow rubber-band against the world border, or seen your character flicker while falling into the void, those headaches are now gone in snapshot builds.
Java and Bedrock
This snapshot is Java Edition only. Bedrock Edition has its own separate release schedule and does not receive Java snapshots. If you or your kids play on Bedrock (console, mobile, Windows Bedrock app), this update does not apply, but keep an eye out for Bedrock preview releases, which often trail Java features by a few weeks to months.
For Server Owners
Two technical version bumps are worth noting if you run your own infrastructure:
- Data Pack version: 116.0, the
minecraft:desert_wellfeature type has been removed;minecraft:templatenow supports processor lists; a newminecraft:randomly_selectedplacement modifier andminecraft:volume_matchblock predicate have been added. - Resource Pack version: 96, the
core/text_background.fshandcore/text_background.vshshaders are gone; text backgrounds on Text Display Entities now use the standard text shaders, and an OIT shader define (OIT_FORCE_ZERO_DEPTH) has been removed.
If you maintain custom data packs or resource packs, audit them against these changes before the snapshot becomes a release candidate.
For Parents
The Invite Code feature makes it much simpler to add your child's friends to a Realm without the Realm owner needing to be present. Codes can expire automatically, so there's no risk of a code floating around the internet indefinitely. The active/inactive toggle also gives parents a quick way to pause new joiners without deleting everything and starting over. Overall, this is a thoughtful quality-of-life improvement for family-managed Realms.
The snapshot label means this is a pre-release, testing version of the game. It is not recommended for everyday play, bugs may still exist. Wait for the full release before encouraging younger players to switch over.
For Players
Good news if you love treasure hunting: the Explorer Maps have cleaner, more descriptive names, so you'll always know exactly what you're holding. No more guessing whether that map leads to a mineshaft or something else entirely.
The boat fix is a big deal for multiplayer adventurers, passengers will finally look where they're actually looking, and camera lag while riding any vehicle has been smoothed out. Villager traders also got smarter: level up a librarian mid-trade and the new books will appear right away instead of requiring you to close the window and reopen it.
And for the cushion decorators out there, your cosy blocks are a little tougher now and won't vanish unless they're completely buried. 🛋️
Do SNT Kingdoms Need an Update?
No action needed, and SNT kingdoms cannot run 26.x clients yet. Here's why:
- SNT kingdoms run Paper 1.21.11 backends with a Fabric 1.21.4 world, all behind a Velocity proxy.
- Clients on versions 1.13 through 1.21.11 connect seamlessly via ViaVersion, ViaBackwards, and ViaRewind.
- Mojang's new year-based versioning (26.x) is not yet supported by PaperMC, Velocity, or the Via suite, so players running the 26.3 snapshot launcher profile will not be able to connect to an SNT kingdom at this time.
- This snapshot also carries the Data Pack version 116.0 and Resource Pack version 96, neither of which affects the 1.21.x stack SNT kingdoms currently operate on.
When stable 26.x support lands in Paper, Velocity, and Via, SNT will handle the upgrade on the back end, kingdom owners won't need to do a thing. For now, keep playing on your usual client version and enjoy the kingdoms as normal!
